Who We Are

For now, Twin Lochs Piping is just me playing the bagpipes, but we are working on eventually adding a snare (side) drummer and tenor drummer.

Don

With a nearly life-long interest in the bagpipes motivating him, Don began learning the instrument in April of 2013. Having been a trumpet player and singer from the age of 7 through his young adulthood Don had a solid music background to call on as he accepted the challenge of learning how to “wrestle the octopus” and learn the pipes. The bagpipes are not an easy instrument to master, and Don has received instruction from such world-class Scottish pipers as Neil Clark and David Methven.

Although many of the most skilled pipers start at an early age, Don is driven to make up for lost time by practicing often and regularly, Don also pushes himself to improve by competing against his peers in solo piping competitions across New England. Don first competed on the practice chanter prior to even owning a set of bagpipes, and since that time he has continued to compete and has met with some success in front of the judges.

To further round himself out as a bagpiper, Don joined the Colum Cille Pipe Band on Cape Cod in late 2015. The opportunity to play with a band has given Don the chance to expand his repertoire significantly in the short time he has been with them. The band competes around New England against other bagpipe bands in Grade 4.

The tartan Don is most often seen wearing is that of Clan Murray of Atholl. The Murray name last appears on Don's family tree maternally five generations back, having emigrated to the US from Scotland six generations ago.
